Podkreślono znaczenie interdyscyplinarnej współpracy stomatologów, logopedów, fizjoterapeutów i higienistek stomatologicznych. Terapia miofunkcjonalna może stanowić istotny element kompleksowego postępowania u pacjentów z zaburzeniami funkcji układu stomatognatycznego.

Summary
The aim of this article is to present the development of the myofunctional concept and the importance of proper oral and orofacial muscle function for the development of stomatognathic structures. The historical foundations of the myofunctional approach are discussed, including observations concerning the influence of muscle function on occlusal and craniofacial development. Contemporary applications of myofunctional therapy are presented, including abnormal breathing, disturbances of tongue position and function, swallowing disorders, orthodontic treatment and supportive management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The importance of interdisciplinary cooperation between dentists, speech therapists, physiotherapists and dental hygienists is emphasized. Myofunctional therapy may constitute an important component of comprehensive management in patients with functional disorders of the stomatognathic system.
