SUMMARY
As a result of tooth trauma or during excavation of deep caries, the pulp may be accidentally exposed. After a thorough assessment of its condition, procedures aimed at preserving vitality can be undertaken. Here, we can distinguish direct and indirect pulp capping, as well as partial and total pulpotomy. The success of these procedures is determined by the correct performance of the entire procedure in aseptic conditions (rubber dam) and the selection of the appropriate covering material. The best percentage of success is characterized by hydraulic cements based on calcium silicate, which is why these materials are considered the gold standard in this indication. Light-cured or dual-cured materials should not be used for pulp capping, because they are not biocompatible and are not able to induce pulp healing.
